Interview with Mukesh Thakwani, Chairman of DPS International Ghana

DPSI is an exceptional school that produces students who are competing at international levels. What developments or achievements have you seen recently?

As the promoter and Chairman of DPS International Ghana, I am incredibly proud of the school’s recent accomplishments. For instance, a few weeks ago, 9 out of 12 children who won gold, silver, and bronze in the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest were from DPSI. Our students have been consistently winning national and international competitions in a range of areas, including sports and academics, such as participating in Olympiad competitions and the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which DPSI won this year. What makes DPSI truly unique is that it is a day-cum-boarding school with all the necessary facilities and amenities within the campus. The school has 28 nationalities represented, which makes for a diverse and enriching educational experience. We take a holistic approach to education, emphasizing not only book knowledge but also extracurricular activities such as art, dance, and sports. DPSI has facilities for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis, football, cricket, and other sports, which further sets us apart.

Can you shed some light on the factors that have contributed to your success? Is it your ability to recruit high-quality teachers, effective management practices, or a rigorous student selection process?

Our organization takes pride in accepting students from diverse backgrounds. Education is a passion-driven profession for us, and we strive to give our 101% in ensuring that every child makes progress from where they start at our school, whether it is academically or through extracurricular activities. We identify each child’s strengths and promote them in unique ways. Our team is highly dedicated, with Madam Tanya Thakwani, my wife, serving as co-Chairman. Together, we have a robust management system, including our principal, Madam Seema Nair, academic heads, and teachers who are doing an exceptional job. Our school culture revolves around bringing out the best in every student and grooming them to become future leaders.

What challenges is DPSI currently facing? And what goals are you working towards now? What do you see as the next challenges or achievements for DPSI?

Recently, we completed our new residential complex, which serves as a day-cum-boarding facility. Our aim is to attract students from all backgrounds, and we have 28 nationalities at our school. We want to welcome more Ghanaian students and families to take advantage of our world-class facilities here in Ghana. We are happy to report that many Ghanaian parents are now bringing their children back to Ghana from abroad, as they recognize the quality of education we provide. Looking forward, we plan to construct an additional block specifically for pre-primary students. This new block will be added soon to our existing facilities.

Numerous aspects of the educational system are now online. Universities are forming agreements for exchange programs, and some courses are being taught by tutors from other countries, through online platforms. Furthermore, the educational system is rapidly evolving through technology. New developments such as Chat GPT need to be considered. How can we adapt the educational system to keep up with these changes?

Regarding the current educational system, I believe we all learned a valuable lesson during the COVID-19 pandemic that we can work and study remotely from our homes. DPSI was able to quickly implement systems to enable our students to continue their studies within two working days of the school closure. Now that the pandemic is over and everyone is returning to campus, I must say that our teachers and school management did an outstanding job during the pandemic. Today, with students back on campus, I believe it is crucial for them to be in a physical environment that provides opportunities for socializing, meeting individuals from diverse backgrounds, and participating in extracurricular activities. Speaking of universities, I am proud to share that this year, one of our students secured 100% scholarship admission to the Howard School in the USA. Our students are also attending renowned institutions such as UCL, Imperial College London, Cambridge, Boston University, and many more worldwide. Our academic program emphasizes not just education but also leadership skills development, enabling our students to excel in both academics and extracurricular activities. As a result, I am confident that our students will become future leaders not just for Ghana, but for their respective countries.

Equity is a key part of your mission to contribute to society. Alongside your business activities, do you enroll students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, including those who may not have the financial means to attend your school? Do you offer scholarships to support such students?

DPSI offers scholarships to students based on their academic performance in various exams. Our parent company, B5 Plus, is a strong supporter of education and is the major promoter of DPSI school. In addition to scholarships, we organize and support various extracurricular activities such as script competitions, educational competitions, and sports competitions. We also conduct health check-ups, blood donations, eye camps, and other initiatives for the betterment of our society.
