A sensor unit installed on the top of each water storage tank periodically monitors and sends the water level data using a dedicated IoT Network; Sigfox. These payloads are transmitted to the cloud, which interfaces with the mobile application to display the data on the owner’s SIMTANK mobile application.

The app includes a dynamic representation of the current tank level as well as water usage data displayed on daily, weekly and monthly graphs. There are different color codes depending on water level and alerts start showing when the level is lower than the threshold keeping you aware of your water situation. The app also allows the user to request for a tank refill as easy as one would request for a ride. It’s like Uber for water.

After the onset COVID-19, Silafrica Kenya Ltd, in partnership with Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Mara Moja Transport and Ultra Red Technologies rolled out the SIMTANK H2O Hand Wash station, which is one of several applications that can be developed on the base SIMTANK H2O smart water storage platform. This was from personal experiences where Mr. Akshay Shah, Group Executive Director at Silafrica, would find most hand wash stations dry whenever he wanted to use them. With the stations being standalones and no refilling mechanism provided, they would remain dry days after installation. One SIMTANK hand wash station allows for four people to use it concurrently consequently saving a lot of time compared to the normal hand wash stations. The stations come with all the features of the SIMTANK H2O smart water storage platform and therefore are ideal for companies, institutions, schools, or organizations who need a permanent solution for user hygiene that doesn’t come with extra requirements, like having to hire new staff to monitor and refill the stations.
