What is your assessment of the industry? Which projects are you involved in directly?
In the construction and contracting field in Kuwait, the oil and gas sector is our biggest area. Currently, in terms of construction, we are working on a new refinery project that is supervised by Kuwait Integrated Petrochemical Industries Co. (a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation) and Gathering Centers Number 30 and 31 by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The total cost of these projects is around 10 billion KD.
As for maintenance projects, currently we are the main contractor in petrochemical complexes that belong to EQUATE Co., as well as the Mina Abdulla Refinery (MAB).
The second area we are active in is infrastructure, for example we participate in the Third Runway Project that is overseen by the General Department of Civil Aviation. We also work on projects related to construction of roads and highways. There is considerable highway construction happening in Kuwait.
We have a strategy to become different than others by acquiring new specialized services which support our business and strength in oil and gas.
Which project that you are participating in are you most proud of?
We are very proud to participate in the new refinery project. We are looking for other opportunities also in the new refinery because construction has just begun on this mega project. In other fields, like infrastructure, we signed a contract with the General Department of Civil Aviation to construct the Third Runway for Kuwait Airport. This is a joint venture with us and an international company. We are also very proud to be the main contractor for these two projects and to have a footprint in such an area.
What will be your involvement in the Kuwait Airport Third Runway Project?
The scope of work for the Third Runway Project has been divided between us and the international company. About 30 percent of the scope of work will be executed by HOT Engineering Co., and it entails of buildings such as the Control Tower, asphalt works, and some networking.
What will be your involvement in the new refinery project?
We are currently the main contractor to build the operating and maintenance buildings for the new refinery project.
This is quite an accomplishment, as it is very difficult to finish projects on schedule in this field.
We have worked on an infrastructure project belonging to the Public Authority For Housing Welfare in the Wafra residential area. This project consists of around 2,400 residential lots. HOT Engineering Co. achieved the target to complete the project on time, and this has been greatly appreciated by the leaders of the public authorities.
What are your key competitive advantages and strengths?
We have a strategy to become different than others by acquiring new specialized services which support our business and strength in oil and gas. In 2015, HOT Engineering Co. set a new strategy to achieve sustainability and continuity in this field. We want to become one of the leading Kuwaiti contractors in oil and gas. In order to achieve this, we must leverage our strength in oil and gas in three different fields: electric instrument, mechanical, and civil. As part of our specialized services, HOT Engineering Co. is now entering the field of providing pre-commissioning and commissioning activities. None of the local companies have these services. In any project, especially in the oil and gas sector, there is a budget for pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, which include cleaning the pipelines, doing leak tests, and making sure everything in the field reflects the design drawings. We have also become the agency for an American company and we offer a specialized service to do pipe cleaning using hydro jet. We call it “hydro milling”. Hydro milling allows for cleaning in a very professional way in a very short time, which saves money. This specialized service is not available anywhere else in Kuwait.
What do you want to achieve as a general manager in two to three years’ time? Where do you want the company to be?
In two to three years, we want to reach our vision to be a leading company in oil and gas. In order to achieve that, we must do things differently than others. We want to become the first choice for the international contractors to serve them in their projects in Kuwait.
