Devshi Kerai, Managing Director of Trident Plumbers Ltd, talks about the construction sector in Kenya and presents the company.

“We as Trident Plumbers Ltd work in the construction industry and development sector. We are divided into two main services. The first is new developments and projects and the second is after sales service. That is how we balance our business. When development goes down, we still have the strength to be in the market and sustain ourselves. Whatever has been installed already, we continue to provide the after sales services for. We also do maintenance and operation of our large projects. We have an entire team to maintain and operate the day to day mechanical services based there 24/7. We have many similar projects. When there are economic downturns or construction slows in the country, we are affected but not put to a standstill. Going forward, we are looking at some challenges we continue to see in our skill developments. There is a gap with what is required in the markets and what we have. We are trying to scale up our own staff by giving proper training so they are up to the standards we need to provide quality service in minimum time to our customers. We have a lot of competition. There are many other companies of our size in the sector. We fall in the top three companies in Kenya in terms of our services. That is where our big competition is but there is competition throughout the market. We are ISO certified so we have rules, regulations, and policies well set. We stand different from others in the market. That is how we get many projects. In terms of challenges in the markets, there are many. Clients look for value for money. There needs to be a balance with money and service. Where we fail sometimes is when the client is looking only for value for money. The lower category contractors are able to go lower than the standard contracting company. That is a big imbalance. That is where the local authority should streamline by standardizing the groups into different classes”, says Devshi Kerai.
