Construction is an important part of the Kenyan economy, as the country leads the East African region in terms of mega construction projects, followed by Ethiopia. Even though Kenya currently has 20 ongoing large projects, basic infrastructure projects such as transport and energy are still on top on the development agenda, and account for 51% and 30% of the projects respectively, according to consultancy firm Deloitte East Africa in a report titled “Africa Construction Trends 2015”.

Kenya Cement Athi River Mining Ltd (ARM) was founded in 1974. The company’s first product was called ‘Dolmax Agricultural Lime’ and it was manufactured in a mill with the modest capacity of 500 kgs per hour. Soon after, ARM started processing a range of industrial minerals for use in the manufacture of paint, rubber, glass, ceramics, plastics, soaps and detergents and cement. The 2 new grinding mills at the company’s cement and clinker plant at Tanga now each produce 150 tonnes per hour. ARM Cement is one of the largest manufacturers of cement in Eastern Africa, with operations in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.

Kenya Paints Crown is a company specialized in decorative paints and automotive paints, established in 1958, with an annual turnover of 6.2 Billion Kenya Shillings. Having established the Kenyan home market with depots and showrooms in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru, focus has spread to take on East Africa. Kenya Cement East African Portland Cement Company started as a trading company importing cement mainly from England for early construction work in East Africa. It was formed by Blue Circle Industries United Kingdom. It was not until February 1933 that the Company was incorporated in Kenya with the first factory in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. In the last few years, EAPCC has greatly expanded its production capacity. With the introduction of Mill No. 5 and the embrace of coal energy, the company can presently produce over 1.3 million tonnes of cement per annum at reduced cost.
