A major problem for industrial development of Kurdistan has been the loss of control over the borders in 2003. As a result, an uncontrolled quantities of goods entered the market, rendering the local industry uncompetitive. Another consequence of the loss of border control was a decline in the number of industrial projects.
Many observers believe that the government is going to adopt initiatives to protect and foster the local industry and thus create a sustainable economy.
