The Internet penetration rate in Iraqi Kurdistan is a subject to controversy. Kawa A. Junad, CEO of Newroz Telecom, the largest and leading Internet provider in Kurdistan, believes that the penetration rate is around 7% in Kurdistan and 1% in the greater Iraq.

Junad says that thanks to Newroz Telecom’s progress and the sector liberalization policies initiated by the KRG, the penetration rate can climb up to 35% by 2013; by 2015 Iraqi Kurdistan can reach an internet penetration rate of more than 50%!

With 85% of the Internet coming through Newroz Telecom, the penetration rate will reflect the strategy and growth of the company.

Junad remains pessimistic regarding the development of the Internet in the rest of Iraq. He claims that Iraq has a long journey ahead strewn with hurdles.
