Increased competition within the wine industry in Lebanon is further reinforcing the reputation of Lebanese wines and the status of Lebanon on the international (wine) scene. Lebanon is today recognized as both a wine-producing and wine-exporting country. Mr. Majdalani comments on building a global brand – Chateau Kefraya.
One of the main challenges for the Lebanese wine industry is a need for political stability in Lebanon.
Over the past 40 years Lebanon used to have 3-5 producers of wine. In the mid 90’s and onwards 15-20 winemakers entered the Lebanese market and the art of winemaking in Lebanon was spreading.
Lebanese wine is no more an export article but there is a tangible tourism to visit the estates of Lebanese wineries.
Chateau Kefraya produces unique wines labelled as “Semper Ultra”.
The export strategy for Chateau Kefraya wine is to focus on high end restaurants and boutique wine shops.
Lebanese belong to the oldest wine producers in the world.
“Historically, Lebanon used to have 3 to 5 producers until the mid 90’s. From the mid 90’s onwards, there was a certain number of companies who started producing wines. In 2005-2006, there were nearly 15 to 20 wineries. In the last 3 to 5 years, there has been several newcomers, so today there are approximately 30 to 35 producers in Lebanon,” comments Gaston Hochar from Chateau Musar. Therefore, thanks to the new producers, new wine products are constantly entering the Lebanese market thereby enriching the already rich variety of Lebanese wines.
Mr. de Bustros tells the history of Chateau Kefraya which started its production during the civil war in Lebanon in 1979. Chateau Kefraya wines are always of highest quality which is also suggested on their labels “Semper Ultra” translated as “always better” or “always higher”.
The 2011 vintage of Chateau Musar was appreciated by a famous American magazine from the West Coast; it was rated as one of the Top 100 wines for the year 2011. Chateau Musar has a particular natural wine production philosophy. In fact they even say that they don’t produce wine; they let the wine produce itself.
