Increased competition within the wine industry in Lebanon is further reinforcing the reputation of Lebanese wines and the status of Lebanon on the international (wine) scene. Lebanon is today recognized as both a wine-producing and wine-exporting country. Mr. Majdalani comments on building a global brand – Chateau Kefraya.
Mr. de Bustros tells the history of Chateau Kefraya which started its production during the civil war in Lebanon in 1979. Chateau Kefraya wines are always of highest quality which is also suggested on their labels “Semper Ultra” translated as “always better” or “always higher”.
The 2011 vintage of Chateau Musar was appreciated by a famous American magazine from the West Coast; it was rated as one of the Top 100 wines for the year 2011. Chateau Musar has a particular natural wine production philosophy. In fact they even say that they don’t produce wine; they let the wine produce itself.
We had our own wine made from our own grapes and from our own winery and thus from that point on we agreed to only use grapes from Kefraya. We started with white wine, rosé wine, and red wine and the Kefraya Nouveau. After this we created many more types of wine and now we have so many. We have three categories: Pleasure Wines, Feast Wines, and Prestige Wines.
In 1857 the Jesuits discovered an ideal place for growing grapes and producing wine which is the Bekaa Valley. They started producing small quantities of wine in Ksara where they built a monastery. Then they started to import noble grapes from France and North Africa and thus, the production increased.
The appeal of our wine is exactly what you have just said: natural products. Our vineyards are certified organic; the grapes come to the winery and the whole process is completely natural without any additions of whatever products you could imagine except for very low levels of sulfites.
