Saudi Arabia’s construction market continues to be one of the most important sectors in the economy. It is estimated that the country plans to invest US$ 806 billion in upcoming projects, until 2030. The structure of the industry is changing. The two well establish behemoths — Saudi Bin Laden and Saudi Oger — are being less dominant with the raise in JV and construction consortium, composed of smaller players and large international construction companies.
In 2013, US$ 64bn worth of contracts were awarded in Saudi Arabia. According to MEED, out of Saudi construction companies, Saudi Binladin Group received the highest portion of the contracts, followed by Almabani. A report by NCB says that the total value of contracts awarded in 2014 reached US$ 58bn — a drop of US$ 6bn compared to 2013 — due to reduction of the size of mega projects. 2015 will be a challenging year for the construction industry but further reductions are not planned.
