Ivory Coast’s
Agriculture Companies
Situated in a tropical region with plenty of rainfall and fertile soil, Ivory Coast relies greatly on agricultural development and is very sensitive to price fluctuations and weather conditions. Ivory Coast is the world’s largest producer and exporter of cocoa beans and a significant producer and exporter of coffee and palm oil. Agriculture is the most important sector in the country. The sector represents almost 28%-35% of the GDP, employs around 68% of the active population, and is dominated by a majority of small scale farmers and a few agricultural aggregators.
One of the main problems of Ivorian agriculture was that when the state’s share started to decline in 1981, the state’s contribution was 25% of the national budget. But in 2007, it was only 1.7%. The government’s strategy is to jumpstart this sector again. In the future, the country would like to develop a functioning processing industry to export in the sub-region. Furthermore, agriculture will be a tool in the socio-economic development of the country. The primary products are cocoa and coffee which along with timber, cotton, pineapples and bananas are the main export crops. The other prominent products include palm kernels, corn, manioc, sweet potatoes, sugar and rubber. The processing of edible oils, sugar, cassava, fruit juices and cocoa by-products makes an important link with the agricultural sector.
Furthermore, meat production in Ivory Coast does not meet local demand due to poor livestock breeding. Also, demand for marine products in the country is increasing and Abidjan is the one of the largest tuna-fishing ports in Africa.
