Interview with Belayneh Mesenbet, Deputy Manager of Aleta Land Coffee
What would you say is the secret behind the 30% growth Aleta Land Coffee has been recording on a yearly basis ever since its inception?
When we talk about the coffee business we also have to talk about facilities. Aleta Land Coffee started 8 years ago and we have been growing year to year by about 30%. This growth has resulted from green business and having different facilities.
In its nature the coffee business, particularly when you are exporting coffee, requires facilities such as warehouses, coffee cleaning process plants etc. Aleta Land Coffee is one of the major coffee exporters in Ethiopia and we have our own coffee cleaning process plant and warehouses. Furthermore, we are managed by professionals so we don’t have any problems in terms of export activities.
In terms of the coffee export, documentation is one of the major tasks as well as fulfilling your commitments on time, and for this you need to have your own facilities. We are also full members of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) which means we don’t have any problems in buying coffee from the Exchange.
Aleta Land Coffee has a parent company which means we are not only working in coffee exports but we are also involved in manufacturing and agriculture. The owner of the company Mr Habtamu Silla has a farm that produces organic coffee and we export that coffee directly from the farm to the buyers. We are also working in other sectors; we have about 3 manufacturing factories that produce PPBK plastics, PVC pipes for construction and other different plastic products including household products.
This company has created a huge number of employment opportunities for the nation. In terms of professionals we have around 60 employees in all these companies and we employ about 400 temporary workers on a contract basis when we process coffee for export.
When buyers purchase coffee they have to think about all of these facilities. We have the warehouses and we have the facilities to supply the coffee on time at the best quality and competitive prices. All of these factors contribute to making us one of the leading coffee exporters in Ethiopia.
