Travel and Tourism Sector: Discover and Explore the United Arab Emirates

Tourism in the UAE is an important sector for the country. Benefitting from economic and political stability, a religiously and culturally tolerant population, as well as a wide range of events and activities, the country is an ideal tourist destination and the most successful among the Gulf nations.

The United Arab Emirates is a federal state located in the Middle East between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is made up of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. Some of those emirates, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are widely known and attract a large number of tourists from all over the world.

Dubai is both an emirate and a city. Abu Dhabi is also both a city and an emirate. The emirate is huge and represents most of the country. In recent years, the capital of the United Arab Emirates has become increasingly popular with travelers and is an essential stopover during a stay in the country. It is quite different from Dubai and more oriented towards cultural tourism. There you will be able to see two of the country’s finest attractions: the magnificent Sheik Zayed Mosque and the Abu Dhabi Louvre Museum.

There are also beautiful deserts in the United Arab Emirates. If you are only planning to stay in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the easiest way is to book a 4×4 excursion to the deserts near these cities. Your driver will take you down the sand dunes and you will be able to spend an evening in a Bedouin camp. If you have your own vehicle, you can drive to the Liwa Desert in the south of the country which is part of the Rub al-Khali, the largest sand desert in the world.

During the month of March, the UAE also attracts travelers from all over the world to attend two big festivals: the Abu Dhabi festival and the Sharjah Biennal, which showcase artistic production and traditional dance in collaboration with foreign artists.

Recently, the UAE government has launched the “UAE Strategy for Domestic Tourism” with the aim to unify local and federal efforts to harness the country’s tourism resources and reinforce the role of domestic tourism in the national economy. As part of the new strategy, the country aims to double the revenue of domestic tourism and achieve a greater balance between domestic and international tourism by 2030. Along with this strategy, the government announced a new unified tourism identity to promote the UAE as a single tourist destination. The unified identity is aligned with the objectives of the “UAE Nation Brand” to establish a positive image of the country regionally and internationally.
