Alam Group

Alam Group of Companies has been in existence for over half a century and is primarily involved in the building and construction industry. Founded by Manzur Alam, from whom it draws its initials, the company has grown many business arms with the very aim of serving the building, mechanical and construction industry of East Africa wholesomely. In doing so, a host of other sister companies have been formed to further consolidate its set objectives. Alam Group boasts of a wide range of prized products thus commanding market trends across the region. Other sister companies have been established in neighbouring countries like Kusco in Kenya and Casements Africa in Rwanda. The Group is one of Uganda’s biggest taxpayers and also one of the biggest employers in the country, with over 1,200 staff working in sectors ranging from steel manufacturing to tourism.

Aya Group

Aya Group is a business conglomerate based in Kampala, Uganda. The group’s business activities extend to other countries such as Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan. Aya Group also maintains subsidiaries in Dubai and New York. It currently has commercial interests in food processing, transportation and logistics, real estate investment and development, hotel development and hospitality industry, as well as mining and beneficiation. It is one of the largest corporate employers in Uganda, with over 5,000 people under payroll.

BMK Group

Incorporated in 1986, BMK Group is one of the oldest family oriented business empires in Uganda. Over the last three decades, BMK Group has expanded its business interests to various activities such as trading, manufacturing, forestry, hospitality, education, heavy machinery, property development and construction, spreaded around Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia and China. The group’s biggest icon product is Hotel Africana, a four star hotel located in Kampala boasting of 250 hotel rooms, 16 conference rooms, 3 restaurants and 55 apartments. The latest addition is BMK House, a 12 storey multi-commercial building with 7200 square meters of rentable office space and 86 furnished apartments.

DFCU Group

The Development Finance Company of Uganda Group, commonly referred to as the DFCU Group, is a financial services company in Uganda which was established in 1964. Over the years DFCU has been helping Ugandans achieve more in the areas of agribusiness, communication, education, health, manufacturing, tourism, mining, real estate construction, trade, commerce and transport. Its business is largely steered by its banking subsidiary: DFCU Bank. It is regulated by Uganda Securities Exchange.

International Medical Group

International Medical Group is a group of health service companies with a regional reputation for customer-focus, innovation and quality patient care. IMG was founded by Dr. Ian Clarke, a physician, missionary, philanthropist and businessman, who was born and educated in Northern Ireland, but has resided in Uganda since 1988. The first company in the group, International Hospital Kampala, was established in 1996. Other member companies of IMG include International Health Sciences University (IHSU), IAA Healthcare, International Medical Foundation (IMF), International Medical Centres (IMC) and International Diagnostic Centre (IDC).

Madhvani Group

Madhvani Group is one of the largest diversified private-sector groups in East Africa, employing over 10,000 people. Established in Uganda in 1914, the Group has developed into a widely-diversified conglomerate with a geographical spread into various African countries, the Middle East, India and North America. Madhvani Group is the largest private-sector investor in industry in Uganda, with a substantial presence in agriculture and agro-processing (sugarcane, tea, floriculture), sugar, sweets and confectioneries, packaged tea, soap, packaging (glass, corrugated cartons, crown corks…), matches, steel (rolling, wire-drawing…). Mukwano Industries Uganda Limited is one of the leading and most respected conglomerates in Eastern and Central Africa. Nice House of Plastics Limited, a member of the Mulwana Group of Companies, is Uganda’s leading manufacturer of plastics products for industrial and household uses.

Ruparelia Group is one of Uganda’s largest conglomerates, with interests in various areas such as: banking, insurance, hospitality, conventions and leisure centres, education, floriculture and real estate. The Group owns more than 200 commercial properties. It was founded in 1985 by Sudhir Ruparelia, a Ugandan business magnate and investor.

Simba Group

Simba Group is an East African conglomerate with interests in telecoms, energy production, mining, media, real estate, travel and leisure. Some of the companies in the group include Simba Telecoms, Kampala Protea Hotel, Eletromaxx, Simba Mining, Simba Dairy Farm and Tororo Solar Power Station, among others. Simba Group was founded by Ugandan businessman and entrepreneur Patrick Bitature.

The Spear Group of Companies is a conglomerate composed of various companies, including: Spear Motors (a franchise distributor and dealer in Mercedes Benz, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Deutz Fahr brands in Uganda); Wavah FM (a private radio station); Star Times Digital Satellite Television Service (a digital satellite distributor of television signals in Uganda); Spear House (an office building in Kampala’s central business district); Wavah Water (a manufacturer and distributor of drinking mineral water in Uganda); GM Tumpeco (a manufacturer and fabricator of steel products); Fancy Furniture (an importer and distributor of high-end office and household furniture); Wavah Books (a publisher of school text books); and Nakweero Mixed Farm (a dairy, beef and crop farm).

Tirupati Development

Tirupati Development Uganda Limited is a conglomerate composed of Tirupati Group Limited (TGL), a privately owned real estate development and construction company in Uganda; Bio-Waste Management Limited, a company that collects and disposes of bio-medical and pharmaceutical waste in an environmentally friendly and safe manner; and Tirupati Agricultural Development Limited, an agribusiness that operates a demonstration farm on 400 acres (with crops including pineapples, maize and onions) and maintains a sugarcane plantation on the adjacent 2,500 acres.

Vision Group

Vision Group incorporated as the New Vision Printing & Publishing Company Limited (NVPPCL), started business in 1986. It is a multimedia business housing newspapers, magazines, internet publishing, televisions, radios, commercial printing, advertising and distribution services. It publishes the New Vision, an English language daily newspaper that appears in print form and online, as well as newspapers and magazines in a variety of Ugandan languages.
