“In terms of industry, Egypt is the third largest market in Africa, the second is Algeria and the first market is South Africa. Moreover, with a population of 90 million, a quarter million vehicles is a very low volume. Therefore, we see a great potential for growth in Egypt,” comments Tarek Atta, Managing Director of GM Egypt & North Africa.
Engineering Square (IDG) started in 2007 as an idea of the former Minister of Trade and Industry Engineer Rashid and some business people. “They invented the so-called industrial developer to create more industrial land in Egypt without putting financial burden on the government. We have sold out about 85%, of which 50% are already functioning. We have about 35 factories operating. Another 25 are under construction,” explains Sameh Attia, Managing Director of Engineering Square (Industrial Development Group).
The Egyptian government is now focusing on small scale industries as a mean of economic and social development. The country’s private sector is dominated by a plethora of small businesses such as farmers, furniture makers or restaurant-owners.
Coca-Cola has been a player in Egypt for over 70 years and it has established itself as the leading beverage company in the country. “Our biggest project here in Egypt is our partnership with the Egyptian Food Bank and our pledge to develop the hundred poorest villages in Egypt. This project will take us all the way into 2020,” explains Omar Mandour, General Manager of Coca-Cola Egypt, Yemen, Libya and South Sudan.
“In spite of all the challenges posed by the Arab Spring period, we have maintained our growth and today we are a leading player in the MENA automotive region. Our headquarters are based in Egypt but we also operate in Iraq, Libya and Algeria,” says Osman Sever, Chief Business Development Officer of Ghabbour Auto.
Though coming out of a challenging period Egyptian industry is showing marked signs of a steady recovery. Industry is the second largest sector in the Egyptian economy and accounts for nearly 40 percent of GDP.
