The top 10 list of the best performing banks in Ghana is compiled and published by the Marcopolis.net research team. The numerical rankings are calculated from the latest available economic reports and the institutions’ annual reports. The final list of Ghana’s top banks is defined by the banks’ assets.
Total assets of the Ghanaian banking system improved from GH¢ 63.4 billion in 2015 to GH¢ 80.9 billion in 2016 which in total represents 27.6% y-o-y growth compared to 23.2% y-o-y growth recorded in 2015.
Ghana’s banking industry is maintaining its profitability and good levels of capital. The banking industry may seem to an outsider as saturated, with the number of deposit money banks reaching number thirty-two and hundreds of microfinance institutions. Despite these relatively high numbers, Ghana’s banking industry remains open with high levels of competitiveness.
The sector is regulated by the Bank of Ghana, which is headed by the Central Bank Governor, Dr Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison, who was appointed by Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the end of March 2017. The Bank of Ghana is self-governed by a set of regulations issued by the Ghana Association of Bankers, the umbrella body of banks in the country.
Ecobank Ghana won the Bank of the Year award at the Ghana Banking Awards 2017 that took place earlier in July 2017. Prudential Bank won the Customer Care and Retail Banking categories, UniBank topped the Long Term Loan Finance category, the Products and Service Innovation award was given to UBA and Ecobank Ghana also won the Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance categories. The leading bank that promotes cashless transactions is Zenith Bank.
Below is the list of top ten best performing banks ranked by assets. The best performing bank is Ecobank Ghana with total assets of more than GH¢ 8 billion, however it is noteworthy to observe the impressive growth recorded by Universal Merchant Bank Ghana (UMB) as opposed to their 2015 financial results—nearly 97% y-o-y growth.
