Hashim was born into a family of thirteen siblings, one of whom is Chairman of Amcorp Properties. Before the age of 21, he became a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretary, and was a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators in Australia. Hashim went on to become a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers, the Malaysian Institute of Management, and the Institute of Directors.
Hashim’s list of careers is extensive and prominent. His career started in 1955 at Messrs O.L. Haines & Co in Australia. When he returned to Malaysia five years later, he was employed with the Bank Negara Malaysia, then left to start his own company Azman & Co. Today, Hashim is Chairman of several companies, and President of many more. He is chairman of the following: Malaysian Investment Banking Association, National Productivity Corporation, Pacific Basin Economic Council international, Institute of Bankers Malaysia, and many others.
Furthermore, Hashim is also President of Malaysia South-South Corporation, Malaysia-Japan Economic Association, Friends of Prisons Association, and more.
As if Hashim’s plate was not already full, he is also a member of numerous groups, cinluding the National Economic Consultative Council II, Business Advisory Council of APEC, Malaysia-British Business Council, International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance, among many more.
Hashim is involved in many charitable endeavors. Some of the foundations he is active in include the Malaysian Liver Foundation, Better Malaysia Foundation, AmGroup Foundation, among many others.
