MTN Group Limited, formerly M-Cell, is a South African multinational mobile telecommunications company, operating in many African, European and Asian countries. Its head office is in Johannesburg. As of 2016, MTN recorded 232.6 million subscribers, making it the eighth largest mobile network operator in the world, and the largest in Africa. Active in over 20 countries, one-third of company revenue come from Nigeria, where it holds about 35% market share.
Established in Ivory Coast on July 1, 2005, the telecommunications company has established a strong presence not only in the country, but in West Africa as a whole. MTN Côte d’Ivoire is a global operator and provider of fixed, mobile and high-speed internet, providing 223 million people in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East. It employes over 750 people to carry out the daily tasks of offering innovative solutions related to mobile and internet services. In Ivory Coast alone, there are 9 million subscribers with a distribution network of more than 65,000 outlets spread across the country.
Because West Africa is saturated with mobile and Internet operators, MTN faced competition in the 2014 fiscal year. MTN’s subscribers increased by 13.3 percent to 8 million subscribers. MTN Mobile Money registered subscribers increased by 74.3 percent to 2.6 million users at the end of December 2014. This service allows anyone with a mobile device to send and receive money.
A commitment to social and environmental responsibility is the main part of MTN’s global operations. With 15 MTN foundations across the globe, each MTN operation invests one percent of net profit after tax into its foundation initiatives. Education and health programs are the focus of the foundation.
