In Mozambique, there are only three mobile operators: mcel, Vodacom and Movitel.

Since its creation in 1997, the sector is led by mcel (Moçambique Celular / Mozambique Mobile).

Vodacom Mozambique is the second mobile operator in the country. The company started its operations in 2003 and is part of Vodacom International Limited.

As for Movitel, it has been awarded for developing innovative services in the field of telecommunications. The company also received recognition for excellence at the international level and became the first operator in Africa to win prestigious awards for 3 years in a row.

Mozambique Telecoms The company mcel (Moçambique Celular / Mozambique Mobile) is the first mobile operator in Mozambique. It was founded in November 1997 and has been responsible for the growth of the mobile telephone service in the country. mcel was the first operator in Mozambique to provide access to advanced technologies such as 3G and Blackberry.


Mozambique Telecoms Vodacom started its operation in Mozambique in December 2003. The shareholders of Vodacom Mozambique include Vodacom International Limited (85%) and local partners such as EMOTEL (Empresa Moçambicana de Telecomunicações – Mozambique Telecommunications Company), Intelec Holdings, Whatana Investments and other small shareholders.


Mozambique Telecoms Movitel is the third mobile telecommunication operator in Mozambique. Its headquarters are based in Maputo. The company has 12 subsidiaries distributed among 11 provinces, 127 district centers and more than 1,500 employees. In 2014, Movitel received the award for best operator in emerging countries.
