Ernesto Gove

Ernesto Gove, Governor of the Bank of Mozambique (BM – Banco de Moçambique), is noted for helping stablise the economy through tight monetary decisions. Through his initiatives, the local currency is stable, inflation has steadied and investor confidence has returned. This has resulted in an uptick in foreign direct investments, partly placing the country among the league of countries with handsome FDI inflows.

He entered the Central Bank in 1976, holding positions in several departments including the Foreign Department, Currency Issuing and Treasury Department, and Credit Departments. He served as Director in Foreign Currency Operations and Currency Issuing and Treasury, before being appointed Executive Director and Member of the Board in 1991, and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mozambique. He also chaired the Board of Directors of the Sociedade de Notícias and the Fiscal Council of the Açucareira de Mafambisse.

Gove graduated in Economics from the Eduardo Mondlane University, and obtained a Master’s degree in Finance Economics from the University of London.

In 2015, he was awarded the “Africa’s Central Bank Governor of the a Year” by The Banker Magazine after beating his colleague central bank governors.
