Unfortunately, most of railroads are very old and do not follow international standards. For this reason, the government decided to intervene in the railroad sector.
Two of the most important elements in the road transport sector are the renewal of the automobile/bus parks and the construction of new highways to connect the country.
The post electoral crisis has left the Côte d’Ivoire transport sector in ruins, which includes the roads, railroads, maritime transport, and airways of Côte d’Ivoire.
Thierry Vandenkerckhove, Chief Executive Officer of Aeria (Aéroport international Félix Houphouët Boigny d’Abidjan)
The International Airport of Abidjan was designed to handle 2 million travellers per year. Mr. Vandenkerchove forecasts that the 1 million milestone should be again reached after 2012. Then, the International Airport of Abidjan will have a steady growth of 5-10% in the years to come.
H.E. Gaoussou Toure, Minister of Transport of Côte d’Ivoire
Ministry of Transport of Côte d’Ivoire is responsible to implement the Government policy on transport. Roads are to be refurbished, taxi system as well – both are too old. Automobile and bus parks need to be renewed, too. Overall, the whole system of transport in Côte d’Ivoire is awaiting a change in the near future.
Georges Philippe Ezaley, General Director of Sodexam
Sodexam is a society for exportation and development of airports in Côte d’Ivoire (with the exception of Abidjan international airport). The company has also the role of managing the National Weather System, which explains the presence of the “m” (meteorology) in “Sodexam”.
Bouaké Fofana, General Director of Ageroute (Ministère des Infrastructures Economiques)
Ageroute is charged with the management and support of road projects in Côte d’Ivoire. The current infrastructure, especially the road network, in Côte d’Ivoire is in a bad shape as there were no new roads built in the past 10-15 years. The planned rehabilitation of thousands of kilometers of roads in Côte d’Ivoire should create 5,000 permanent jobs in the next 5 years.
The infrastructure of Ivory Coast has been negatively affected by the post-electoral crisis, which subsequently affected the transportation sector. But the government is now reconstructing the country. Recent infrastructure projects have been delivered and many more have been announced.
