Baalbek International Music Festival: Where the Gods and Men Sing

Whilst Bacchus (or Dionysus) was known as the god of wine, his temple now brings music-worshippers from all over the world together once a year in June/July at the Baalbek International Music Festival. Whereas in the UK you can´t even get near the legendary stones at Stone Henge, at Baalbek you can actually enjoy classical music, jazz, opera, rock and pop amidst some of the largest and best preserved Roman ruins still standing. Famous not just for their monumental scale but also for their exquisite detail the ruins at Baalbek, once called Helipolis, are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be found an hour and a half´s drive from Beirut, in the fertile Beqaa Valley.
