Djibouti to Host the 2026 Francophonie Economic Mission: A Strategic Gateway for Business Partnerships in East Africa

From 6 to 8 October 2026, Djibouti will welcome business leaders, investors, institutions and entrepreneurs from across the French-speaking world for the seventh edition of the Mission économique de la Francophonie, organised by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) in partnership with the Government of Djibouti. The event aims to strengthen economic cooperation, facilitate investment, and create lasting commercial partnerships between companies operating throughout the Francophone world.
A flagship event for Francophone business
Over the past several years, the Mission économique de la Francophonie has become one of the OIF’s most important economic initiatives. Rather than being a traditional conference, it is designed as a practical business platform where participants meet potential partners, identify investment opportunities, and build concrete commercial relationships.
The mission reflects the OIF’s ambition to transform the Francophone community into a stronger economic space by encouraging trade, entrepreneurship, innovation, and private sector collaboration among its member states.
Why Djibouti?
The choice of Djibouti is far from accidental.
Located at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, Djibouti occupies one of the world’s most strategic geographical positions. Sitting at the entrance to the Red Sea and overlooking the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the country lies along one of the busiest maritime routes on the planet. It also serves as the principal gateway to Ethiopia, one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, while providing access to the wider East African market of approximately 600 million consumers.
Djibouti’s authorities see the event as an opportunity to further strengthen this strategic position. During the official launch of preparations for the mission, Mariam Hamadou Ali, Minister Delegate for Investment and Private Sector Development, emphasised the national importance of the event:
“The Francophonie Economic Mission represents an opportunity to promote Djibouti’s strengths and consolidate its position as a regional hub for trade and investment.”
Strong support from the private sector
The initiative has also received enthusiastic backing from Djibouti’s business community.
Speaking during the official information session organised by the Chamber of Commerce of Djibouti, Youssouf Moussa Dawaleh, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Djibouti, highlighted the significance of hosting the event for the first time:
“Hosting the Francophonie Economic Mission for the first time in Djibouti represents a strategic opportunity for our national private sector. It will help stimulate entrepreneurship, create business and employment opportunities, and strengthen our country’s economic attractiveness.”
He also encouraged Djiboutian companies to register on the OIF platform and actively participate in the mission to maximise the opportunities created by the event.
Objectives of the mission
The three-day programme has been designed to help companies accelerate their international development by providing direct access to decision-makers and business opportunities.
Its principal objectives include encouraging business partnerships between Francophone companies, increasing trade within the Francophone economic space, facilitating investment, promoting innovation, creating cross-border collaborations and strengthening long-term economic cooperation.
Target sectors
The mission will focus on five strategic sectors identified by the Government of Djibouti as national priorities:
- Transport and logistics linked to free zones
- Digital services and innovation
- Renewable energy
- Health
- Sustainable tourism
Nearly 400 companies from around 90 countries had already expressed interest during the preparation phase, illustrating the growing international appeal of the event.
A programme built around business
Unlike many international conferences, the Mission économique de la Francophonie places business development at the centre of every activity.
Participants will benefit from high-level conferences, tailored B2B meetings, networking sessions, discussions with public and private sector decision makers, expert workshops, and visits to strategic economic sites across Djibouti. The programme is specifically designed to generate concrete business partnerships rather than simply facilitate networking.
Djibouti’s growing role as a regional business hub
Over the past decade, Djibouti has invested heavily in world-class ports, logistics parks, free trade zones and transport infrastructure, reinforcing its role as one of Africa’s leading logistics platforms.
The country’s ambition extends beyond infrastructure. According to Djibouti’s national broadcaster RTD, hosting the Mission économique de la Francophonie demonstrates the country’s determination to deepen its economic integration within the Francophone world:
“By hosting the Francophonie Economic Mission, Djibouti confirms its ambition to strengthen its economic integration within the Francophone community and to promote an environment conducive to investment, innovation and private sector development.”
Beyond networking
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Mission économique de la Francophonie is its emphasis on measurable business outcomes.
Rather than simply exchanging business cards, participating companies are encouraged to negotiate distribution agreements, explore joint ventures, identify investment opportunities and establish long-term commercial partnerships.
For companies looking to expand into East Africa, the event provides direct access to key decision makers from both the public and private sectors while showcasing Djibouti’s role as a strategic gateway to one of the world’s fastest-growing regions.
A catalyst for Francophone economic cooperation
As Africa continues to experience rapid demographic and economic growth, strengthening commercial ties between French-speaking countries has become increasingly important.
The 2026 Mission économique de la Francophonie represents far more than a three-day conference. It reflects a shared ambition between the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and the Republic of Djibouti to build a stronger Francophone business ecosystem, encourage responsible investment and create sustainable partnerships across Africa and beyond.
For entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders, the event offers a unique opportunity to discover one of Africa’s most strategically located economies while building relationships that can support long-term international growth.
