In the plastic packaging industry, in-mould labelling (IML) is one of the most futuristic and innovative labelling technologies. In IML, pre-printed labels are infused to the packaging during the injection moulding process. The blend of these two becomes superior quality, highly attractive, durable, and robust packaging compared to both direct inking and sleeve shrinkage technologies.
IML also removes the need for a separate adhesive film, usually made from different plastic compounds, thus making IML packaging a recyclable single-material packaging.
With customers increasingly becoming conscious of the health and environment impact of the packaging technologies used, they are now largely preferring packaging made from the IML technology. This has led to suppliers switching from traditional packaging manufacturing processes to the revolutionary IML manufacturing process.
Silafrica, the leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) packaging manufacturer in East Africa, was the seventh company in the world and the first company in Africa to adopt the IML process in the manufacture of yoghurt cups. This has enabled Silafrica to have one of the shortest supplier lead times in the countries of operations, while also allowing customers to have total creative design of their brands as changing the label design to reflect promotions and campaigns is extremely easy and cheap!
The IML yoghurt cups produced by Silafrica, which come in different sizes and volumes as illustrated in the table below, are very smooth, giving them a unique identity on the shelf and thus increasing the probability of a customer picking the brand.
Yoghurt processing companies in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia are already reaping from the value created by the Silafrica yoghurt cups through aligning themselves with circular economy while getting more attractive packaging, the result of which has been more customer loyalty leading to more revenue and a high compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) .
